The MJM Guaranteed Standard exists to remove uncertainty from buying vintage jars, while staying honest about what vintage glass is, and isn’t.
This isn’t a promise of perfection.
It’s a promise of care, clarity, and usability.
Every jar that meets our standard is:
✔ Free of visible cracks
✔ Free of chips that affect the jar's ability to seal
✔ Clean and sanitized
✔ Individually inspected under bright backlighting
✔ Clearly identified lid compatibility in the product description
✔ Measured and accurately described
✔ Ready for everyday use or display
We never sell jars with cracks or functional damage.
On very old jars, tiny rim nicks, often called “flea bites” are considered normal only when they do not affect sealing or usability.
Anything that compromises function does not make it to our shelves.
Jars with large chips in the rim, or neck do not meet our standard.
All jars are:
washed
run through a sanitizing dishwasher cycle
carefully inspected
They arrive clean and ready to use, though not packaged as sterile items.
Every jar passes through multiple inspections, including a detailed review under bright light with both white and black backgrounds.
This allows us to see:
✔ Hairline cracks
✔ Chips
✔ Etching
✔ Rust
✔ Residue or adhesive
Anything questionable is reprocessed, repurposed as a painted “revival jar” (available in store) or recycled responsibly.
Every jar is clearly labeled as fitting:
✔ Small Mouth Continuous Thread (63mm)
✔ Regular Mouth Continuous Thread (70mm)
✔ Wide Mouth Continuous Thread (83mm)
✔ GEM (inset or overset) (78mm)
✔ Specialty or uncommon lids
Each listing includes approximate measurements, including:
height
widest diameter
volume
Because vintage jars vary slightly, measurements are generalized, especially volume.
We regularly remove jars that are:
cracked
significantly chipped
deeply etched
structurally compromised
Some become painted “revival jars.”
Others are recycled.
Only jars we fully stand behind earn the MJM Guaranteed Standard.
Because these jars were made decades (or more than a century) ago, natural variations are part of their story. Here’s what you can expect:
Subtle color variation.Just like modern glass, vintage jars can vary slightly in tone from one jar to another.
Air bubbles in the glass. The older the jar, the more likely you’ll see bubbles formed during early glassmaking. We consider these a mark of craftsmanship.
Light surface wear. Very old jars often show surface scratches from decades of use and storage. This is normal and expected.
Embossing variation.Lettering and logos can range from deep and bold to soft and shallow, even within the same style.
Minor wobble or lean. Some jars may not sit perfectly flat or may lean slightly to one side. This is a common characteristic of vintage glass and does not affect usability.
These characteristics do not affect function, they’re simply part of what makes vintage jars beautiful.
